I wrote a terrible, terrible poem.
I've never been the type of person to daydream
But then I met you and my mind burst at the seams.
You plucked me from reality and dropped me in love
And left me stuttering prayers to something above.
For me, you tried to be all that you could.
You mimicked witty and romantic and patient and good
But copying homework yields no lesson for you;
Your heart was valiant, but your mind couldn't continue.
You gave me a reason to dwell not on the past
And rewrote my DNA to believe good things last
But a lab coat doesn't make you a scientist
And just saying "forever" doesn't make true love exist.
You're just like the rest in the sense that they're gone
But you were the first person to give me a place to belong
Every contract expires eventually
Was I right to let the caged bird free?
